The Wintergarten Berlin opened in the 19th century and survived the decadent 1920’s, but was destroyed during a World War II; it eventually reopened in 1992. The theater has continually drawn performers of all stripes as well as design talent. Operating as Bennett & Böhme, Fiona Bennett and Hans-Joachim Böhme—who own a millinery shop across the street—reinvented the theater’s basement, home to the restrooms. They jumped at the chance to re-conceive the 3,000 square feet, assuring that there would be no standard white tile or fluorescent lighting to be found here.
This “makeup column” in the restroom / lounge is decorated with coated steel leaves; velvet covers custom ottomans while stone and glass mosaics tile the floor.
